This training manual is to provide trainers with basic knowledge on issues of local governance and women’s inclusion in local issues, election campaign management, social communication and community initiatives
A simplified introductory booklet that explains the local councils’ constitution’s articles, clarifying their duties and responsibilities, trying to link the local development programs and the needs of women in Egypt was also developed as a result of this project.
In 2017, Tadwein for Gender Studies designed a project “The Councils are Ours” to encourage and support the effective participation of women in the Egyptian local councils. The project aimed to create more spaces for women to effectively occupy political and public spaces, fight social stigmas regarding women’s presence and participation in political spaces, provide better representation of youth in the formal political channels, and address issues of violence against women at the local level.
On Monday, July 11, 2016, we were surprised by the statement of Dr Ahmed El-Tahawy, a member of the Egyptian Parliament. He stressed the necessity of female circumcision, in response to a memorandum regarding the toughening of the penalty for female circumcision presented by the National Population Council. The words of the representative were shocking and unfair to Egyptian women, who are exposed to psychological, physical, and sexual harm as a result of this bad habit.
In collaboration with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), Tadwein for Gender Studies developed a social media campaign to raise awareness about FGM and shed light on the needed efforts to end FGM in Egypt. The campaign included testimonials, from women and girls, about the unforgettable emotional traumas they experienced because of this harmful practice. The women expressed their feelings and their outrage at all of their relatives who participated in this crime.
In 2016, Tadwein for Gender Studies developed Egypt’s first interactive online map on GBV programs and projects.
On the 11th of April 2016, Tadwein for Gender Studies held a conference to launch the “Map of Gender-Based Violence Projects in Egypt” project, which aims to provide an open source of data for various programs and projects related to gender-based violence and to provide more in-depth data on the various efforts exerted by NGOs working in this field.
Tadwein for Gender Studies in collaboration with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, and the Cairo Foundation for Development and Law has launched an electronic campaign during 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign aimed to emphasize the importance of comprehensive sex education as a way to solve the many problems related to sexual and reproductive health, and it used the hashtag #Not_a_shame to eradicate the stigma related to sex education in Egypt.
The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, Tadwein for Gender Studies, and Cairo Foundation for Development and Law announce the end of the activities of the Campaign “Sexual Education is a Necessity, not a Luxury” #Not_a_Shame, which came along within the international campaign: “16 Days Against Gender-Based Violence”, which is held every year From November 25th to December 10th.
