A Meeting to Discuss the Inclusion of FGM in the Curricula of Medical Colleges

Tadwein Center for Gender Studies held a meeting to discuss the integration of topics about the harms of the practice of female genital mutilation and the spread of the practice of “medicalization of FGM” in the curricula of medical colleges, on Sunday, February 23 2020. Second Statement by The Anti-FGM Task Force

The Anti-FGM Taskforce is saddened and angered by the death of Nada, a 12-year-old girl, in the village of al-Hawatka in Assiut governorate. The girl died after undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM), at the private clinic of an obstetrician-gynecologist on Wednesday, 29 January 2020. The child hotline at the National Center for Childhood and Motherhood (16000) received a report of the incident (no. 10187), after which Nada’s father and the physician who performed the procedure were arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution (case no. 578/2020/Manfalout administrative).

Closing Conference: Gender Sensitization among Young People in Egypt Project

On January 28, 2020, Tadwein for Gender Studies organized a conference to close its project titled “Towards an Effective Change in Gender Perceptions for Adolescents.” During the conference, a training manual to combat gender-based violence among adolescents was launched.  The conference was attended by representatives from the Egyptian parliament, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and NGOs.

Press Release about Launching “No to Medicalizing FGM” Campaign

On November 25th of every year, the world celebrates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This day marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence which ends with the celebration of Human Rights Day, which falls on December 10th. This tradition began in 1999 with a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, remarking November 25th of each year as a day to raise awareness of all forms of violence against women.

Stop the Medicalization of FGM Campaign

The crime of FGM comes on top of the crimes that women and girls already suffer from in Egypt. Therefore, Tadwein for Gender Studies launched a campaign titled “Stop the Medicalization of FGM” during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign aimed to shed light on the medicalization of FGM and to raise doctors’ awareness and knowledge about the issue.

The Impact of Child Marriage on Young Egyptian Girls

Tadwein has worked on this project from mid-2019 to mid-2020. Tadwein is implementing this project to raise awareness about the harmful impacts of early/child marriage on the lives of women in urban greater Cairo and rural areas in Fayoum.

Round Table Discussion: Towards Safe Work Environment for Female Journalists in Egypt

Tadwein for Gender Studies has organized a roundtable to discuss effective solutions to the problem of the unsafe work environment for female journalists in Egypt. The aim of the discussion was to identify a set of measures and policies to ensure the protection of female workers in press and media institutions from any form of sexual violence, whether in the workplace or in their fieldwork. Tadwein for Gender Studies, with the help of media professionals and journalists, tried to draft a set of policies to be adopted by the media and journalistic outlets to ensure a safe working environment free from all forms of sexual violence toward women
