Tadwein for Gender Studies launched a campaign \u201cKilled Because They Were Women\u201d to shed light on the issue of femicide in Egypt. During this campaign, the results of a study conducted by Tadwein for Gender Studies documenting a total of 151 cases of murder and suicide of women and girls from different age groups during the period from October 2021 to October 2022 were disseminated.<\/p>\n
The World Health Organization defines femicide as the intentional killing of women or girls simply because they are females. It is mostly men who commit femicide, but sometimes the killing of women or girls may occur also by a female family member. Most cases of femicide are committed by the current or former husbands\/intimate partners. According to the findings of the United Nations Drugs and Crime Agency (UNODC), about 47,000 women or girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members in 2020.<\/p>\n
In light of these high numbers, Tadwein for Gender Studies launched the \u201cKilled Because They Were Women\u201d campaign during the 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence international campaign. The campaign published stories of women and girls who were deliberately killed or committed suicide because they were female. The campaign also included a series of awareness-raising sessions about FGM in the governorates of Fayoum, Giza, and Qalyubia.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
