Female Genital Mutilation is one of the forms of violence against girls and women. The World Health Organization defines FGM as “any operation that involves partial or total removal of the female genital organs without a medical reason for it.”
Egypt has one of the highest rates of FGM in the world. According to the results of the Demographic Health Survey in Egypt in 2014, 92% of the ever-married women who age from 15 and 49 years have been subjected to FGM.
Therefore, Tadwein Center for Gender Studies launched an online campaign through its social media platforms entitled “Mayenfaash” to educate males about the physical and psychological dangers of FGM. The campaign was launched on the International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation, on 6 February 2018.
During this campaign, Tadwein Center for Gender Studies tried to create a state of controversy among users of social media to raise awareness and initiate a societal discussion to reject the continuation of FGM/ C in Egypt.
